Best known for giving Earl Grey tea its distinctive, citrusy aroma, bergamot is actually named after the old city of Bergamo in Italy, where the oil was first sold in Europe.

This organic essential oil is produced by cold pressing the crude peel of a pear-shaped citrus fruit which resembles a cross between a grapefruit and an orange. The fruit is inedible and grown especially to produce its fragrant essential oil. Its complex aroma is dominantly citrus but has fruity and sweet tones, with a spicy, warm yet floral quality. Bergamot is a favourite of the perfumery industry for its balancing and harmonising qualities.
